Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is chaired by Simon Caraffi and meets quarterly.

The Trustees are responsible for governance of the Charity and we are very grateful to them for all the time they give to help steer HighGround forwards.

Brig (Retd) Simon Caraffi MBE JP, Board of Trustees Chairman

Simon was commissioned from RMA Sandhurst into The Royal Tank Regiment in 1977 and spent the next 12 years at Regimental Duty in Germany, Northern Ireland and completing an in-service degree in history at King’s College London. Subsequent appointments included Commanding Officer 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, Chief of Staff to the UN mission in the Congo, Commander British Army Training Unit Suffield in Canada, Deputy Commanding General Civilian Police Advisory and Training Team in Baghdad and Director Royal Armoured Corps.

He left the Army in 2012 and took up the post of CEO of St Peter’s Hospice in Bristol, a registered charity. He retired from this in 2019 and now fills his time as a magistrate, a committee member of his fly-fishing club, travelling, fishing, cycling, gardening and walking the dog. He and his wife Michele live in Somerset and have a son (an agricultural consultant) and a daughter and 3 grandsons.

Simon says: “Having served as an Army officer for 37 years and then resettled into a satisfying second career in the charity sector I think I am well placed to help HighGround in its next stages of development. I have already seen for myself the valuable work HighGround does for rehabilitation at DMRC and for those considering resettling into the land-based economy, and I look forward to working with the Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers to build on the first 10 years of this excellent charity’s work.”
