Follow HighGround’s journey as Andy begins work on the ‘Beautiful Borders’ entry at Gardeners’ World Live 2021.

January 01, 2021

Make Do and Mend is the name of the Beautiful Borders entry for HighGround at BBC Gardeners World Live 2021. All of the hard landscaping components of the border will be made from everyday materials found around Stanford Hall, including pallets and packing crates from deliveries. The paving, shed and Bug Hotel and the fence will all be made from these recycled materials. Our patients wherever possible will be involved in the construction of these elements and will hopefully also be able to be involved on site at the NEC in Birmingham.

The aim with the hard landscaping is to show how things can be adapted and modified to suit a new purpose, much like the journey of a lot of patients going through rehab with us. A lot of the plants in the border will be grown at Stanford Hall in the greenhouse as part of patient Horticultural Therapy sessions. All these plants will be very sensory to highlight the power of flowers – the Beautiful Borders theme this year is ‘flower power’ all the plants will stimulate the senses and create a very healing and calm environment for both us humans and any passing wildlife.
