THE TORTUOUS BIRTH OF A NATION – ISRAEL’S MILITARY HISTORY – A SELF GUIDING TOUR BOOK

The book is a compilation of several battlefield tour presentations which cover the greater part of the country and span the past 103 years of the Arab / Israeli conflict in the Holy Land. The book covers also the first involvement of the international community in the affairs of modern day Israel – namely the Crusaders.

Starting with General Allenby’s remarkable success in capturing Gaza and subsequently Jerusalem in December 1917, the tour takes the traveler to the Latrun Peninsula situated between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. This strategic piece of ground was held from 1948 (Israel’s Independence) until the Six Day War in 1967 and evidence of Jordanian defence positions remain to this day.

In order to give some balance to the contentious issue of who owns the Holy Land, I have included the less well known Battle of Karameh in 1968 and used that as a vehicle to try to explain the Palestinian / Arab position. By covering the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the tour takes the traveler to the Golan Heights with views into Syria. Israeli incursions into Lebanon from 1982 -2006 are discussed in the final chapter.
