The Royal Marines Week

Following the success of our first Rural Week for Royal Marines Young Recruits in 2022, RMA The Royal Marines Charity commissioned HighGround to run a similar week at Bicton which started on Sunday 29th October, 2023.
We were blessed with glorious late autumn weather all week and as well as a packed programme of activities including Environmental Conservation at RSPB Aylesbeare Common with Toby Taylor clearing bracken and making dormouse nesting boxes, rope access and chainsaw maintenance with Lee Kimber and Matt and Kirsty from Hi-Line Forest School with Neil and Lee from The Outdoors Group Blacksmithing with Ian Parmenter a trip to Bicton’s Home Farm to meet the dairy cows and self-employment with Jamie Ranson from Langore Tree Services we were privileged to have an outstanding programme of evening speakers.
On Monday evening Billy Meldrum the Corps RSM came to Bicton to give these young men wise, humble and truly inspiring words of wisdom and advice gained from his many years of dedicated service to the Royal Marines and his Country.
Tuesday evening was a visit to Budleigh Riding School to meet Rob Batson who share some of his experiences in the King’s Troop RHA (with the usual banter) and on Wednesday some of our class of 2022 Aden , Brad and Donwynne Checkout his Inyama Biltong, it’s fab!) came back to talk to our Young Recruits about what they have been doing since their week at Bicton. They are all shining examples of how commitment, hard work, and support from HighGround, RMA The RM Charity and others pays dividends. The fact they were able to share all this in front of Ben Curry new CEO of the RM Charity made it extra special!
We thank everyone who gave their time, knowledge and hospitality so freely and Bicton for looking after us all so well.
