We were delighted to attend the opening of the SSAFA Chelsea Garden at Norton House and look forward to delivering more patient sessions there in the future.

Autumn has finally arrived. It’s cooler, the leaves are starting to turn, we are continuing to seed save and harvest the last of the vegetables. The frame for the decking has been cut and laid out ready to be fitted together so that the decking can be added. We are edging ever closer to completion.

Norton House

We were really pleased to attend the official opening of the SSAFA Chelsea Garden at Norton House recently. We did several Horticultural Therapy sessions with patients over the summer to help with planting the garden. Despite the very wet and blustery day the garden looked amazing, and we are hoping to visit monthly to deliver further therapy sessions with our patients. It’s an opportunity to link in with other local community projects and provides a wider environment for us to deliver sessions.

Barnsdale Gardens Community Visit

We visited Barnsdale Gardens with a small group of patients and staff who have been attending sessions regularly. It was a good day out, enjoyed by all, a chilly start but the sun appeared eventually. We tasked our patient group with researching information about the gardens, the designer and specific plants to collate as we went round. This allowed us to introduce a specific focus on information processing to work on development of cognitive skills. We also included specific tasks on identifying plants to then purchase at the plant nursery with an allocated budget so also including communication skills and budgeting. Most importantly though was the chance to experience and enjoy the gardens. We intend to return to track the changes through the seasons.
