The sun has most definitely been making a regular appearance this month, and all the plants are appreciating it as well as the whole team. We have welcomed our garden volunteers back who as always do an excellent job of supporting us and their help is greatly appreciated. The daffodils are in full flower, spring blossom is on the trees and everything else is gradually emerging. Grace has taken charge of the compost and built a large riddle for sieving it so we can mulch the beds and create space for fresh compostable materials. We now have two extra raised beds in the Pears Walled Garden which will accommodate vegetable plants and are partly planted with potatoes and kohlrabi with room spare.
Trellis Conference – We attended the annual Trellis Conference in Perth. It was a an informative day in a beautiful setting with opportunity to reflect on practice, share ideas, knowledge and receive an update on the work being done to develop a therapeutic horticulture professional association and register
We have made a second “no dig” bed to create extra growing space at ground level and made the first grass cut of the year. The “no dig” bed created a useful opportunity for a challenging activity to work on balance and mobility and replicate a work activity by lifting and emptying compost bags to fill the bed.
Sweet Peas – Our Autumn sown Sweet Peas have generated a few different therapeutic activities from the original seed sowing, to pricking out, and potting on into larger pots with Dogwood plant supports. Some of the seeds used were saved from last years crop. All of these activities require manual dexterity and strength, provide an opportunity to learn about the lifecycle of a plant an the potential for a sensory stimulation through a summer of colour and scent as the flowers appear.
