We begin the mindful activity of seed saving with patients as we explore the many patterns and textures they contain.

August 31, 2022

Finally, the temperature has dropped, and we have had some welcome rain showers. The Unit kindly loaned us a gazebo to shade us from the sun on the hotter days earlier in the month which provided welcome respite from the heat. The harvesting continues with lots of chillies on the way. Sadly, the pumpkins have not fared well with the heat this year. We have sown lots of flowering annuals ready for next year and herbs which remain a popular sensory plant with patients.

Village Green

We are gradually planting up the new raised beds on the Village Green and the pergola is now finished. Next stage will be to build the frame for the decking to cover the gravel and enable easier access into the area. This will also provide a useful therapeutic activity cognitively, physically, and vocationally for following a more complicated set of instructions, problem solving, testing work tolerance and positions.

Seed Saving

It the time of year to start seed saving. We are collecting as many different types of seeds as we can to grow in the coming year. This can be a very mindful activity due to its repetitive nature, there is much to learn about the process for those interested in the task as a leisure activity and it’s a good way to practice fine motor skills. In a recent group session, there was much interest in the patterns within the dried seed and seed pod which made for an interesting photo opportunity. So far, we have collected Sunflowers, Hollyhocks, Marigolds and Cosmos. The Hollyhock seed pods are being saved for seasonal crafts later in the year.
