We are delighted to see the completion of the Village Green area and patients get creative with their pumpkin carving.

October 31, 2023

The village green is finally finished so we now have a fully accessible area for both staff and patients which we’re looking forward to using. Many thanks to all at DMRC who helped to get the area completed so promptly. We have had 2 new staff start with HighGround. Steven Waters has started as Therapeutic Gardens Manager and will be working alongside me at Stanford Hall. We also have a new CEO named Jamie Crisp who visited recently and is hoping to visit regularly. Our volunteers have finished for the season. We have appreciated their support this year. Their final task was to assist us with running a mini farm shop full of the final produce harvested and supporting with a series of pumpkin carving workshops for both staff and patients.

Tree Planting

Myself and vocational rehabilitation OT, Charlotte Dunkley recently met with Kimberley Durham from Harborough Woodland Community Volunteers. They are supporting a local landowner, near to Market Harborough, to plant areas of their land with hawthorn hedging and saplings. We are intending to take a small group of patients in the New Year. The visit will help us to engage with the local community and provide a therapeutic activity for patients interested in learning about tree planting.

Pumpkin carving and painting

This has been a good therapeutic activity for our patients. A great deal of dexterity and grip strength is needed to mark the design, scoop out the seeds and cut out the flesh. Following a process, making decisions, using judgement concentrating and remembering instructions all enable practice of cognitive function. Most of the sessions were run in small groups which provided an opportunity for social interaction, sharing of tips and ideas. It’s a fun activity offering a chance to take time out from the clinical environment and be creative, all good for mental health and well-being.
