British Sugar Topsoil make a generous donation as they choose to support HighGround for a second year.

This month has seen the beginning of the Christmas craft season as we start foraging for foliage and the first Christmas wreath of the season is made. We have planted out garlic, onions, and broad beans to overwinter. The kale and cabbage are still going strong. The Greenhouse and surrounding areas are surprisingly full of herbs, chillies and perennial and biennial seedlings. We were visited recently by our Trustees who came to Stanford Hall for their quarterly meeting and a chance to see the progress we are making with our areas. We were also really pleased to welcome a visit by Andy Spetch and his colleagues from British Sugar Topsoil to present a cheque to HighGround after being their chosen charity for a second year running. They have generously donated £4,033 which was gratefully received, and we enjoyed being able to share the work we do.

Christmas Wreaths

It’s that time of year and an opportunity for our patients to engage in an activity that provides the chance to be creative and practice mindfulness. It’s a great task to work on upper limb function, dexterity, and grip strength and if done in standing could work on standing tolerance. Incorporate foraging for materials and it could also work on progression of mobility and balance. It’s surprising the variety of wreaths which are produced. Each with its own unique stamp and with a sense of achievement to have a finished product to take home.

Seed Saving

We have gathered a good collection of seeds of all shapes and sizes from sunflowers and salvias to chillies and tomatoes. It’s a useful task to generate interest in the different methods of saving seed, an understanding of the life cycle of the plant and the variety of seed types available. It’s also a good task for working on manual dexterity plus it’s a cost-effective way of producing new plants.
