This February it’s all about Sweet Peas!

February 28, 2021

The days are getting a little lighter and longer as we get closer to Spring, but the arrival of more snow earlier in the month reminds us that we are not quite there yet.

Seed sowing has been the main order of the day as the greenhouse is gradually filling with seedlings – always a welcome sight.

We are very grateful for the kind donation of sweet peas seeds from Easton Walled Gardens, who have also supported HighGround by producing the HighGround Sweet Pea mix. £1 from every tin sold goes to support HighGround. You can buy them here to support our work. Thank-you!

Seed sowing and pricking out

We have now sown all our sweet pea seeds, and are looking forward to a summer display of sweet peas in our planters near to the front of the greenhouse. This has been a good activity to talk about the basics of sowing from seed for those new to gardening. For those patients who are more familiar with this gardening task it is a chance to learn more about growing this type of plant and compare the ornamental with the edible. A beneficial activity for dexterity, focus, concentration and following the correct sequence in an activity.

Winter Scavenger Hunt

We have produced a Winter scavenger hunt for patients to do in their own time, particularly over the weekends, to provide some additional activities. It is a chance to spend time outdoors in nature, good for both physical and mental health and wellbeing but also an opportunity to learn how to identify Winter plants. We plan to do more scavenger hunts throughout the year as a way of marking the changing seasons.

Trellis

I have just finished the online course with Trellis | Supporting Health Through Horticulture on Winter Gardening activities and am looking forward to further training through their series of online seminars this month. It is a great opportunity to develop networks with other organisations working in the field of Therapeutic Horticulture.
