Floral Displays
This month has seen us do plenty of potting on and planting out as we find homes for all of our former seedlings. Everything is growing which makes for some amazing floral displays but also ups the level of maintenance required as the weeds grow too, and more watering is needed. We are starting to get some produce, in particular salads, herbs and rhubarb with more on the way as the season progresses. The cornflowers, gypsophila and sweet peas are in abundance for cutting but we are saving some for drying to be used for seasonal crafts.
Container Gardening
This is a useful way of growing in a small space or as part of a larger display or garden with ornamental or edible plants.
Herb planters – Grouping a variety of herbs together in the same pot to make a small herb garden was a good therapeutic activity for patients attending shorter periods of rehabilitation. An activity to stimulate the senses, learn about growing, maintaining and using herbs, as well as physically being able to complete the task with an end result to take away and enjoy.
Broken pot planters – We have made these before, but they were desperately in need of re-planting. A good way to recycle broken pots is by using the broken sections to create planting pockets in the main body of the pot. We used succulents with a view to propagating more in the future. A level of dexterity, co-ordination and problem-solving skills are needed but it’s also a way to be creative. Our patients were pleased with the finished product on display at the greenhouse entrance.
Hanging Baskets – Finally, the summer hanging basket which is always a favourite. This year we have a mix of flowering summer annuals and edibles in the form of tumbling cherry tomatoes with basil. We delivered a staff health and well-being session making these, offering staff an opportunity to relax, take time out and create a colourful display.
