Daffodils and Pansies in the planters.
March 31, 2022
Emerging into Spring
We have been struggling to find space in the Greenhouse as the seed sowing continues and the success rate of germination is high, so space is at a premium. It’s wonderful to see our plants doing well and always a joy to see the seedling emerge and continue to grow, all in the compost donated by our wonderful Friends at Vitax. The winter pansies in the planters are continuing to flourish and spring bulbs are coming through adding to the rainbow of colour. We are planning a Farm Shop later in April and should have a good selection of plants available. We have continued to visit a local community orchard to do some fruit tree pruning and hope to return later in the year for some summer pruning.
Trellis Training
I’ve enjoyed attending some of the seminar series from Trellis earlier in March covering different aspects of Therapeutic Horticulture. They offer such a wide variety of topics from studies in Iraq, to emerging practitioners Down Under and always provide inspiration for practical activities to do with patients. I’m planning to make some wildflower seed bombs in sessions soon. Trellis Seminar Series 2022 | Trellis
Seed Sowing and Pricking out seedlings
This is such a good activity to work on a variety of skills from dexterity to cognitive skills such as planning and sequencing and even standing tolerance. The repetitive nature of the task can be very relaxing and a good opportunity to practice mindfulness, but the range of seeds and seedlings provides a variety of type and size. New skills can be learnt about the process of propagation and germination. But for me one of the most exciting things about this activity is the sense of hope as the seedling emerges and continues to grow. Our patients always like to track the progress of their plants and have likened it to their own rehab journey of growth and change. It’s a positive activity full of hope for the future.
