Growing season well underway
The Greenhouse is gradually starting to fill up as seeds germinate, seedlings are pricked out and plants potted on. Our colourful pansy and polyanthus planters are providing some much-needed Winter cheer. We are planning to grow a wide range of ornamental plants from summer bedding to cut flowers and have made a good start with the asters and cosmos which have germinated well. Our new Village Green raised bed area is making good progress. The beds are now finished, and we have permission to lay decking to replace the gravel in situ which will make it more accessible for our patients.
Adaptive tools
We have been very lucky to have received a donation of pruning tools from Darlac. This has provided the opportunity to develop our range of tools so we have a wider selection, to meet different patient needs. For those patients who have upper limb injuries we can now trial different tool sizes, weight, type of grip, and supported movement to help each person identify the best tool to enable them to continue gardening independently.
Community Orchard Pruning
We are linking in with a local community orchard to do fruit tree pruning as a therapeutic activity with patients. This activity works on a wide range of skills, including balance, standing tolerance and upper body strength. It’s a good activity to learn about the principles of pruning and tests decision making, judgement and problem solving.
