Promises of spring

February 29, 2024

The plant trollies have arrived offering much needed extra space as the greenhouse is starting to fill with seedlings. Pops of colour are appearing in the garden, with yellow daffodils in our borders the hint of Spring to come.

Tree planting plans with Harborough Woodland Trust at Haygate Farm have been postponed due to poor weather. We are currently looking at alternative dates before the middle of March. This is likely to be a long-term project so the tree and hedge planting will continue from November this year, providing more opportunities for our patients to get involved.

Seed sowing

Seed sowing is gathering pace as we reach the end of February. This year we’re focusing on a wider range of growing mediums offering a greater variety of different sensory stimulation, as well as learning different techniques for sowing.

Wildflower seed bombs

An activity which has proved popular before and has now been included in the staff well being session programme. Using air drying clay, add a pinch of seeds and roll into a ball or egg shape for Easter. Once dry, these can be painted to decorate, making a good springtime gift. Once scattered on open ground with loosened soil, the clay will break down scattering the wildflower seed. Therapeutically this requires manual dexterity, grip strength and hand/eye co-ordination. If done when standing, the activity can work on standing tolerance and balance. A requirement to follow and understand instruction and make judgements about quantities and proportions is necessary. It offers an opportunity for creative expression, is a good activity to practice mindfulness, achieve a sense of accomplishment and learn about growing wildflowers.
