Patients work as a team to help plan and run HighGround’s successful farm shop.

May 31, 2021

The therapeutic garden areas are now in full bloom after the cool start to May has been followed by warmer weather, as the month draws to a close. The perennial bed in the Pears walled garden is coming into its own and we are working on a formal vegetable bed in this area too.

This month saw our first Farm Shop since last October. We had a really good turnout of staff and sold lots of plants. The funds we raised will enable us to stock up on materials for use in Horticultural Therapy sessions.

Farm Shop

This is the first time we have been supported by patients to help plan and run the Farm Shop. The planning and preparation for the Farm Shop was a really useful tool for working on cognitive processes to research information on some of the plants being sold and to produce information signs to use in the Unit shop and posters to advertise it.

Putting up the signs to match different plants with their names also supported with thinking processes, as did following instructions to set up the Farm Shop.

Physical skills such as standing tolerance, balance and co-ordination were incorporated when setting up the Farm Shop to lay out the stalls, putting out, and replenishing the stock as the day progressed.

Helping customers to choose plants, pack items, advise on pricing, was a really good way to interact socially and develop confidence. So, a good opportunity to work on a variety of skills but overall working as a team to bring it all together and have fun was the most important message to take away.

The sleepers funded by the Army Central Fund have arrived, and work will now start in June. We will bring you more news as the build progresses.
