Our Neuro group get creative and brighten up November by making colourful pallet planters and Christmas wreaths.

This month we have started the seasonal wreaths and have been foraging for foliage to dress the wreaths such as Yew, Conifer, Holly, pinecones and dried seed heads from sedum, allium and poppy. It’s amazing what can already be found to use in the natural environment and once you start looking there are numerous possibilities everywhere.

Onions, garlic and broad beans are out and ready for overwintering. The kale, chard and spinach are still growing, roses are ready for pruning, and we’ve had some success germinating pansies for Winter colour.

We are hoping to do a final Farm Shop next month and some of the decorations and wreaths we are making will build up our stock ready for this.

Pallet planters

It’s been quite a while since we have made a new pallet planter, but it seemed like a good time to provide a space to display winter colour. Our Neuro group have decorated and planted up two planters with Winter pansies, cyclamen and wallflowers. These will provide some much-needed colour for the Neuro garden, but it was also an opportunity to practise hand-eye co-ordination, dexterity, learn about Winter plants, and be creative.

Seasonal Wreaths

We have started decorating willow and metal wreaths which always prove popular as we move towards Christmas. It’s a useful activity to work on hand function but can also be helpful to provide a sense of achievement with a tangible end result. Wreath making can be seasonal and as such provide a talking point to learn about plants throughout the year. It requires concentration and focus, but can be an activity to help practice mindfulness. It’s a skill which can be shared with family and friends and above all each wreath is unique to its maker.
