Finally…a break in the weather!

April 04, 2024

The rain keeps coming but a recent break in the weather with a few drier spells has provided a welcome opportunity to deliver Horticultural Therapy sessions outdoors. Planting out Cornflowers and Godetia for cutting, herbs as part of a larger herb bed, weeding, mulching, and preparing beds ready for planting have all occupied our time as spring beckons. The garden volunteers have made a welcome return and supported us pricking out the huge amount of seedlings as the seed sowing continues.

Hedge Planting

The weather held so we were finally able to go to Haygate Farm with one of our patients. The landowner is developing the site, in conjunction with the Harborough Woodland Trust and planting a variety of trees and hedging. We spent the day planting 140 hawthorn whips and put in stakes for support.

This was a good activity for working on standing tolerance, balance, lower limb strength, upper and lower limb gross motor skills, varied working positions (static and dynamic) and grip strength. Vocationally benefits were learning a new skill and gaining an understanding of the wider environmental benefits of hedge planting. Socially there was opportunity to interact with other volunteers and work as a team. The advantages of spending time in nature are well documented and there was a sense of achievement as the day drew to a close and we proudly looked back at our efforts.
