An opportunity for patients to practise mindfulness working on seasonal crafts.

October 31, 2021

October draws to a close and our harvest is also in its final stages. The pumpkins and ornamental gourds proved very popular in our recent Farm Shop together with the chillies, some seeds and colourful houseplants. This time of year often brings with it a move towards seasonal crafts and we have been busy pumpkin carving, threading chilli strings, and doing botanical paintings to make seed packets.

Seasonal crafts

All the above seasonal crafts are helpful for working on fine motor control but also great for focus, concentration and following and remembering a sequence. The opportunity for creative expression is so important for our mental health and well-being and seasonal crafts are a great way of doing this. These type of activities can be really useful for practising mindfulness; a chance to really focus and lose ourselves for a while. The end result can provide a real sense of achievement and be a confidence boost. A tangible end result, be it a carved pumpkin to light a candle, a dried chilli to add to a cooking pot or a seed to sow and start the cycle of growing again.

Cut flowers

This month I have been lucky enough to attend a Sarah Raven course on growing cut flowers. A beautiful venue and lots of ideas and inspiration. Our new Village Green area will provide extra growing space for cut flowers amongst other things. This will give a wider variety of therapeutic activities which we can do with patients.
