A welcome Summer Fete, soaring temperatures and a bountiful harvest.

The temperatures have soared this month meaning lots of watering in the greenhouse. We are starting to harvest our fruit and vegetables with good crops of strawberries, onions, garlic and broad beans amongst other things. The sunflowers are growing taller by the day and the pumpkins are gradually emerging.

Two of our Gardening Volunteers made a welcome return this month with another due back at the beginning of August. It’s great to have the support from our wider team again. There are always plenty of gardening jobs on the to do list at this time of year.

DMRC Summer Fete

DMRC hosted a COVID secure summer fete for staff and patients. It was a very hot sunny day and was enjoyed by all. HighGround had a plant stall with a steady stream of customers. The basil, dahlias and coleus proved to be very popular.

Staff Health & Wellbeing

We had the opportunity to deliver a short virtual presentation to the Unit to provide an update on the Horticultural Therapy Service, current projects and future plans. It was well received and has generated further interest in staff health and wellbeing sessions.

Developing minds, developing gardens

This month we have had a number of patients with a new or already established interest in horticulture but keen to learn more to carry on gardening at home. From growing chillies and basil on a sunny windowsill, to adding colour to a border to taking on a new overgrown allotment. It’s such a good opportunity to develop a new interest and what is so noticeable, is that this is something which can be shared with family and friends. Be it teaching children where their food comes from, creating an outdoor space to enjoy with a partner or sharing tips with fellow gardeners it’s an activity which benefits more than the individual.
