Having worked in aviation since leaving the Royal Navy in 2003 I decided that I wanted a change and improvement in quality of life with work in the great outdoors, building on some farming experience gained in the agricultural sector in New Zealand.  I didn’t have a clue where to start looking but was inspired by a HighGround presentation through the Officers’ Association and decided to learn more of the industry and opportunities.

The Rural Week at Bicton was the most amazing introduction to the huge diversity of careers available in the land-based sector and the team were fantastic in facilitating that.  I worried that a return to serious agriculture at 57 would be a bit risky with family commitments, but using the motivation, advice and recruitment websites provided by HighGround I can across the perfect compromise.  I started work this year for the Rural Payments Agency, advising farmers of grant schemes and visiting farms to ensure compliance, being amongst agriculture without the financial risk!  I have learnt so much in the role so far and long may it continue……………….all with a Civil Service pension!
