Trustees Week

November 06, 2024

We are nothing without the experience, guidance and independent judgement of our Trustees. So during Trustee Week, here is a celebration of HighGround’s Trustees and a few a words from them about why they chose to take up this role.

Simon Carafi (Chair)

“I enjoy being a HighGround trustee enormously; I work with highly motivated staff and fellow trustees to fulfil the charity’s purpose which is something we all really believe in. It is very satisfying to get the positive feedback we always receive from our beneficiaries, knowing that what we do is meaningful and helpful. I would always encourage people to look for trustee positions in charities which interest them and to which they can contribute their personal experience, expertise and knowledge.”

I have been a Trustee with HighGround for over 5 years and have found it one of the most rewarding things I have done since leaving the Royal Navy over a decade ago. I first got involved with the charity because it appealed to my own sense that those who have served in uniform are naturally suited to work in the outdoor environment.  The resettlement process does its best to help all Service leavers but, as I had discovered, there is very little to assist those wanting to pursue a second career in the Land based sector.
Initially I agreed to volunteer for the charity but soon became involved in the Development Board (now Advisory Panel); a small group offering subject matter expertise across the sector. Subsequently I was asked, and agreed, to take a seat at the Trustees Board. This was a decision I have never regretted and one that has enabled me to learn and grow whist helping others to realise some of their hopes and ambitions.
HighGround is a wonderful charity, now entering its second decade it will, I am sure continue to develop without ever losing sight of those serving personnel and veterans that lie at  the heart of its mission. I very much hope to remain part of that journey for years to come.
