HORTICULTURAL THERAPY
Our preparations at Stanford Hall for the start of the Horticultural Therapy service are now well advanced and the magnificent greenhouse built using the original Foster and Pearson fittings and adapted specially to accommodate our unique client group is nearly ready.
Jane ran some Christmas wreath making sessions for patients which proved to be very popular and as long as the weather holds for long enough to lay the floor tiles, we should be good to go in early January. You can follow Jane’s Monthly Journal here; and Andy’s Instagram account is here. |

PROFILE: CHRIS SHEPHERD
We couldn’t deliver Rural Weeks at Bicton College without Chris who runs the Timetable and organises all the wonderful visits to farms, golf clubs, nature reserves and so much more.

RURAL WEEKS
Our 2018 Rural Weeks programme at Bicton finished in December with a full house as we welcomed 10 Service Leavers and Veterans for a week of presentations and visits, all organised by the wonderful Chris Shepherd.
In 2018 we have delivered 7 Rural Weeks for serving personnel and veterans from all 3 services; our youngest HighGrounder was 20, and the oldest 62.
We thank our wonderful funders, and look forward to the start of our 2019 Rural Weeks programme on 31st March.

HMP DARTMOOR
Following a request from the Governor, Chris Shepherd and Anna delivered the first of 2 pilot ‘Rural Experiences’ (only 3 days so we couldn’t call it a week….) in late November for 8 veteran inmates at HMP Dartmoor. The 2nd pilot will be in March 2019 and the results will be reviewed and evaluated in April.

One inmate who joined us for the 3 days commented:
“It made me realise that a lot of the military experience we have gained is transferable and can actually be an asset to potential employers. The more opportunities we are given the less likely people are to reoffend. This also gives us a light at the end of the tunnel and given me more positivity that we can still build a future with hard work and that a criminal record does not end your employability.”
We are currently seeking funding to run the second pilot, please contact Anna if you would like more details. |
