Welcome to our Autumn edition to keep you
up to date with all HighGround’s news.
The highlight of late Summer for me was a
visit to the King’s Troop while they were on
their holidays in Norfolk to talk to them about
land-based employment – and I made a new
friend!

FRIENDS OF HIGHGROUND
FHG is the voluntary arm of HighGround which supports and promotes the work of the Charity through
fundraising and community awareness initiatives both locally and nationally.
The Vision is to create a network of Friends who will promote and facilitate the work of HighGround.
Whilst the majority of our fundraising still comes from grant-making trusts and foundations, by starting the
Friends of HighGround our aim is to diversify our funding sources to include more corporate and personal
donations.
To that end we have drawn up a Wishlist which we update quarterly. We don’t have a designated Fundraising
department and rely on the Friends of HighGround to help us raise our current annual budget which is
£315,250 and help us build our Reserves. Friends who volunteer to have a stand at events need a banner,
branded tablecloth, collecting tins and leaflets which we call our ‘show pack’ – this all costs money.
We have welcomed more than 15 new Friends of HighGround since our last newsletter and on 7th September,
Anna and Andy were honoured to be invited to the unveiling of the new Friends of the Tenth memorial near
Somerby in Leicestershire which commemorates the men from The 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment
who left from there to join the Battle of Arnhem in 1944.
|
|
|
We have volunteered to help maintain the
landscape around the memorial and if you know
anyone who would be interested in helping the
Friends of HighGround to do this, Anna would be
delighted to hear from you.
Thanks to Jon and Jeff who took a stand for us at
North Devon Show, and to Team Brian who spent
a blustery July weekend on a stand at Ipswich
Maritime Festival – both events resulted in new
Friend sign-ups which is brilliant.

RURAL WEEKS
Our Autumn Rural Weeks programme at Bicton
started with a visit from Colonel Chapman, the new
Commandant of Royal Marines Commando Training
Centre Lympstone and we were delighted to welcome
Steve Ensell from BALI as a new presenter.
We are very grateful to the Soldiers’ Charity, RAF
Benevolent Fund, Greenwich Hospital and the Royal
Marines Charity for their continued support of Rural
Weeks.

HORTICULTURAL THERAPY
DMRC Stanford Hall is now operating at FOC or Full
Operating Capability and we have welcomed visitors
including George Plumptre from the National Gardens
Scheme, our dear friends Karl and Sarah from Sutton
& East Surrey Water, Mick Brown from Chatsworth
and David Richardson from the Commonwealth War
Graves Commission.
We are all so proud of what is being achieved at
Stanford Hall and as we say goodbye to Group Captain
Griffiths and await our new Commanding Officer, time
to stop and remember those who helped to make this
incredible journey possible. Thank-you all.

HORSEFERRY ROAD
Huge welcome to Sue Harper who has joined the Board of Trustees, and we are delighted to announce
that thanks to the generosity of The Royal Foundation, Jemma Jones will be joining us as Rural Business
Improvement Manager in January, to help us prepare for our first Rural Employment Manager who will be
joining Team HighGround in 2020.
Our Development Board met in September, and we welcomed several new members which is terrific news.
All small steps but very important ones, as we seek to develop and improve the service we provide for those
who have served their Country with Life beyond the military – Outdoors.
